History

DUFS has an enriched history of 54 years of film society movement at University of Dhaka as well in Bangladesh.

DUFS got registration from the Bangladesh Film Censor Board in 1993. DUFS started its journey to ‘BETTER FLM BETTER VIEWERS’ then. But it took four attempts to take DUFS in this position, from where this student’s organization can perform in a consistent way. Though the first three attempts were short lived, still each attempts played an important role to take this society to this present glorious position.

Dhaka University Film Society first started its journey in the year of 1962. Mr. Mahbub Jamil and Mr. Mohammad Selim were among the chief organizer at that time. The society was active strongly for several years.

During the latter part of 1970’s, students formed another film society, named ‘Science Cine Club’. In December 1981, this club arranged a film workshop. Prof. Sotish Bahadur and Prof. Surendro Chowdhury of Pune Film Institute were among the instructors of that workshop. Science Cine Club soon became the center of film related activities at the University of Dhaka premise.

DUFS was reborn on July 15, 1991. It was like the first step to a consistent set-up. On August 25, 1993, DUFS got its registration from Bangladesh Film Censor Board. Dr. Mohammad Towhidul Anwar, Chairman of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism of the University of Dhaka worked as a moderator of the society during that time. In 1996, this responsibility was taken by Dr. A A M S Arefin Siddique,  honorable former Vice-Chancellor of University of Dhaka.
